[STU] Ordering Emptiness - reimagining empty places
The concept of emptiness is closely connected to the landscape materiality, revealing a complex relationship that needs careful analysis. In my study of this relationship, I used visual data to create a short video that deliberately juxtaposed two images, with the goal to convey the complexity of emptiness in a rural community. The first image represents the gaze over the landscape, with the viewer looking over the camera, reading the surroundings and making sense of it. Conversely, the second image shows what is behind the camera and what caught the viewer's attention, immersing the audience and inviting them to look closely and draw meaning from it. The deliberate juxtaposition of two distinct images acts as a methodological tool for articulating the nuance of the concept, promoting intellectual engagement, and encouraging active participation in the construction of emptiness. The goal of this visual approach is to encourage the viewers to critically reflect on their conceptualisation of emptiness. In the end, the short video does not offer a definitive answer about emptiness. Instead, the video is designed to spark curiosity and a sense of exploration. Through the process of watching and interpreting the landscape materiality, the viewer can construct a broader understanding of emptiness that encompasses alternative enactments of this concept.
